INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS
Aims and Scope: The Journal of Cognition and Development publishes the very best articles on research that informs cognitive development, including behavioral, computational, cognitive neuroscience, adult cognition, cross-cultural, and cross-species comparative approaches that address how cognition develops. The journal’s primary focus is on full length empirical reports although high impact short reports (max. 4000 words in the body of the text) will also be considered. In addition to empirical reports, the journal includes a feature called “Tools of the Trade” (authored by invitation only) regarding methodological issues of interest to the readership of the journal, theoretical essays (occasionally accompanied by peer commentaries), and essay reviews of new and significant books. Criteria for acceptance of submitted manuscripts include the theoretical import of the research, the substance of the argument (including methodological rigor and support for conclusions drawn), the ingenuity of ideas or approach, the quality of expression, and the relevance of the work to issues of broad interest.
Submission of Manuscripts:
The Journal of Cognition and Development is now on Scholar One (formerly known as Manuscript Central). All new submissions and review requests will be processed through this web-based journal management system. If you have questions about the system, please contact jcogdev@emory.edu.

To submit a new manuscript, create an account, or become a reviewer for JCD, please go to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hjcd

Manuscripts that are currently under consideration by another journal, or that have been published previously, in whole or in part, may not be submitted.

Manuscript Preparation: Prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed., 2001). Examples:
Journal: Brierly D., (2007). Emotional memory for words: Separating content and context. Cognition & Emotion, 21(3), 495–521.
Book: Smith, E., & Mackie, D. (2000). Social psychology. Philadelphia: Psychology Press.
Contribution to a Book: Tanner, W. P. & Swets, J. A. (2001). A decision-making theory of visual detection. In S. Yantis (ed.), Visual perception (pp. 48–55). Philadelphia: Psychology Press.
In addition, observe these exceptions and considerations: (1) A note should be inserted in the text to indicate the approximate placement of each figure and table. (2) Acknowledgments and a complete mailing address (including phone number, fax number, and e-mail address) should appear on the title page of the unmasked copy of the manuscript. Authors will receive reviews and most editorial correspondence via e-mail. (3) Authors must obtain permission from copyright owners if they use tables, figures, or lengthy quotes (500 words or more) that have been published elsewhere. Authors should write to both the publisher and the original author(s) of such material, requesting nonexclusive world rights in all languages for its use in the article and in future print and nonprint editions. Provide copies of all permissions and credit lines obtained. (4) Once a manuscript has been accepted for publication, authors will be required to submit an electronic copy of their manuscript via email; the text should be saved in MS Word or WordPerfect; tables and figures should be saved in a separate file. (5) Authors of accepted manuscripts will have an opportunity to contribute supplementary material to the Journal of Cognition and Development electronic archive. For further information, please direct enquiries to the Editorial Office via e-mail: jcogdev@emory.edu
Illustrations: Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines: 300 dpi or higher; sized to fit on journal page; EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only; submitted as separate files; not embedded in text files. Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.
Tables and Figures: Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author’s name, and top edge indicated.
Proofs and Reprints: Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor &Francis’ Central Article Tracking System (CATS).
